The Department of English at Balurghat College emphasizes life-oriented, value-based education aiming at nurturing socially conscious, culturally harmonious leaders. Key facets include:

The Honours (Major) in English is open to approximately 200 + students per academic session. The large intake capacity across general and reserved categories is aimed towards proving learning opportunities to a large number of students. Affiliated to the University of Gour Banga, the department operates within a rigorous curriculum framework that aligns with the University’s liberal education model.

• Though a separate placement cell doesn't exist, graduates often clear competitive exams like NET/SET and pursue further studies, reflecting the department’s nurturing of intellectual ambition.

• Three students of the Department have got placed as Assistant Professors from 2015 to 2017
• Eight students have been placed as Assistant Teachers from 2017 to 2019
• Two faculties of the department used to be former students of the same Department
